\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The residents of Park Merced have experienced a significant increase of burglaries on the Park Merced property. In the month of April, the Taraval district had 39 incidents of burglary. Approximately half of the total number of these burglaries occurred around the Park Merced area. Most of the residents who have fallen victim to the burglaries are students who reside with roommates. The victims were\u00a0leaving their front doors unlocked and leaving electronics (laptops and tablets) easily accessible in the living area. We are seeing a crime trend in which suspects are simply checking for locked doors. If the door is unlocked, the suspect makes entry into the residence and takes a quick scan of the living room area for electronics. Once the electronic is located, the suspect quickly leaves the residence undetected. In many of the cases, the victim will report they heard the front door open but believed that it was a roommate returning home. When they hear the door again, they then leave their bedroom area to discover that their electronics had\u00a0been stolen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As of May 15th<\/sup>, there were 33 burglaries in the Taraval district, 20 were located in the Park Merced area with\u00a016 of the Park Merced cases being\u00a0hot prowl burglaries. It is important to know that burglary suspects communicate with each other. Once word gets out of a target rich location, it is predictable that burglaries will increase. Due to the fact, most of the cases around Park Merced are unlawful entries vs. a forced entry, it is important the residents keep their doors locked at all times<\/span>.<\/strong> When electronics are not in use, secure them in a location of your residence that is not easily accessible to a suspect. The same can be said for purses and backpacks. I strongly recommend in a residence with roommates, that a note be left on the interior of the door reminding each other to lock the door.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As the Commanding Officer of Taraval Station, I have assigned this issue as a priority for the officer\u2019s daily mission with an increase of uniform visibility. Our Taraval Station Investigations Team (SIT) and the Taraval Neighborhood Team (TNT) are working in partnership to identify and apprehend suspects. We have active investigations occurring but we need the help of the residents to play a role in their neighborhood’s safety. <\/strong>We have also been working closely with the Park Merced management team and security, to get the word out to residents and to collect video evidence for the ongoing investigations. My staff has created flyers to alert residents of the increase we are seeing and steps the residents can take to prevent themselves from being victimized. These flyers will be handed out door to door by the officers of Taraval station. If you receive or see a flyer and have questions, please contact me at Taraval police station. If you see a suspect checking doors around your residence, please call 911 and give a full description of the suspect.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Arrest made<\/u><\/strong>: In response to the recent burglary series in the Park Merced area, the Taraval Neighborhood Team (TNT) and Taraval Station Investigations Team (SIT) have been diligent in their efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects who are victimizing the Park Merced residents. Last week their diligence paid off when they arrested one of the suspects responsible and also obtained a search warrant for the suspect\u2019s residence. The members of TNT were able to recover a stolen wallet that was taken during a burglary. They also recovered a large amount of US currency and obtained a confession from the suspect. As the commanding officer of Taraval Station, I am incredibly proud the officer\u2019s commitment to the community and their relentless efforts to identify and apprehend suspects. This arrest is only one example of many active investigations being handled by TNT and I am confident we will see more arrests in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Another hot topic for many residents are the amount of theft from auto cases we continue to experience. In recent weeks, we have seen an increase along the lower Lincoln corridor, the Great Highway area and around SFSU. While apprehending suspects who break into cars can be challenging, the officers of Taraval Station in partnership with residents did exactly that! On May 18, 2017 residents called 911 to report a subject that was possibly \u201ccasing cars\u201d in the area of 24th<\/sup> Ave and Ortega. The residents were able to supply a detailed description and officers quickly responded. As the officers arrived on scene, armed with the suspect\u2019s description, they began a thorough search of the area. While searching the area, Officer Carroll observed the described suspect attempting to shatter the window of a vehicle. Officer Carroll took the suspect into custody, who had in his possession a window punch and his hand was bloody. The actions of the responding officers did not end with the suspect\u2019s apprehension. Fellow officers searched the area for additional victim vehicles. In doing so, they located 5 additional vehicles broken into in the immediate area with trace evidence. In this case, the suspect was booked on 5 counts of auto burglary and one count of attempted burglary. Both the residents and the officers should be commended for this arrest. It was through their partnership that a suspect was arrested and no doubt their actions prevented further car break ins in the area! Please remember, do not <\/span>to <\/span>leave anything in your vehicle<\/u><\/strong>. Whether you are parking your vehicle over night or just for a few minutes as you run an errand, if you leave items visible in your vehicle there is a high likelihood you too will fall victim to these thieves.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Last night I had the honor of attending a follow up meeting in the OMI. This meeting provided an opportunity for city agencies to discuss measures that had been completed to strengthen the safety in the OMI amidst a growing concern over violence in the area of Plymouth and Broad. For those who attended, it was a time to interact with each other as discussions were held in break out groups. The discussions focused on public safety, neighborhood safety and engagement and services provided to the neighborhood. It was great to see so many residents participating and especially good to see many of our monolingual residents voicing their concerns and opinions. Special Thanks to Jackie Battle of the Minnie Lovie Center, Sara Burton of SFSafe, Sandra Zuniga of SF Fix-It program and to all the community members who participated in meeting planning. My hope for the community is that through engagement, we can continue to develop trusting relationships as we all strive for improved safety throughout our neighborhoods. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th<\/sup> as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date fall as Police Week. On May 18th<\/sup>, in honor of the many law enforcement officers and specifically Taraval officers, the Taraval Community Police Advisory Board (CPAB) and the SF Police Credit Union hosted \u201cTaraval Officer Appreciation Day\u201d at Taraval Station. It was a wonderful opportunity for officers to share a meal with each other, along with the members of the CPAB, representatives from the SFPCU and members of the SFPD Command Staff (Asst Chief Chaplin and Commander Ann Mannix).\u00a0 Special Thanks to the Mayor\u2019s Office, Supervisor Safai, Supervisor Tang, Supervisor Yee and Darlene Hong (SFPCU) for taking the time to show your appreciation to the men and women of Taraval Station. On Saturday, May 20th<\/sup>, an awards banquet was held at the Irish Cultural Center. It was my pleasure to witness Officer Downs humbly accept the award as he was surrounded by his family, close friends and fellow officers of Taraval Station. \u4f5c\u70baTaraval\u8b66\u5bdf\u5206\u5c40\u7684\u6307\u63ee\u5b98\uff0c\u6211\u5df2\u5c07\u7206\u7aca \u6848\u5b9a\u70ba\u8b66\u54e1\u6bcf\u65e5\u5de5\u4f5c\u7684\u512a\u5148\u8655\u7406\u4efb\u52d9\uff0c\u53ca\u589e\u52a0\u8ecd\u88dd\u8b66\u54e1\u5de1\u908f\uff0cTaraval\u8abf\u67e5\u5c0f\u968a\uff08SIT\uff09\u53caTaraval\u9130\u91cc\u5c0f\u968a\uff08TNT\uff09\u6b63\u806f\u624b\u78ba\u5b9a\u53ca\u902e\u6355\u7591\u72af\uff0c\u6211 \u5011\u6b63\u7a4d\u6975\u8abf\u67e5\uff0c\u4f46\u6211\u5011\u9700\u8981\u5e02\u6c11\u5e6b\u5fd9\u5728\u793e\u5340\u5b89\u5168\u626e\u6f14\u91cd\u8981\u89d2\u8272\u3002\u6211\u5011\u4e5f\u6b63\u8207Park Merced\u7ba1\u7406\u53ca\u4fdd\u5b89\u7d44\u7dca\u5bc6\u5408\u4f5c\u63d0\u9192\u5c45\u6c11\uff0c\u53ca\u641c\u96c6\u9632\u76dc\u93e1\u982d\u62cd\u5230\u7684\u8996\u983b\u3002\u6211\u7684\u540c\u50da\u88fd\u4f5c\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u55ae\u5f35\u63d0\u9192\u4f4f\u6236\u6709\u95dc\u7206\u7aca\u6848\u4e0a\u5347\u53ca\u5c45\u6c11\u53ef\u4ee5\u63a1\u53d6\u9810\u9632\u7206\u7aca\u7684\u63aa\u65bd\u3002 Taraval\u8b66\u54e1\u6703\u6328\u5bb6\u9010\u6236\u6d3e\u767c\u55ae\u5f35\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u5011\u6536\u5230\u55ae\u5f35\u5f8c\u6709\u4efb\u4f55\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u6b61\u8fce\u8207\u6211\u806f\u7d61\uff1b\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u5011\u767c\u73fe\u7591\u72af\u5728\u4f60\u7684\u4f4f\u6240\u9644\u8fd1\u67e5\u770b\u9130\u5c45\u9580\u6236\uff0c\u8acb\u7acb\u5373\u81f4\u96fb911\u53ca \u63cf\u8ff0\u7591\u72af\u7279\u5fb5\u3002<\/span><\/p>\n
