On Super Bowl Sunday, February 1, there will be lots of game day socializing that may include drinking. That\u2019s why the California Office of Traffic Safety and police, Sheriffs, the CHP are urging football fans to choose sides now: drinking OR driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, designate a sober driver to get you home safely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The <em>Fans Don\u2019t Let Fans Drive Drunk<\/em> campaign encourages people to make plans ahead of time that will prevent them from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking. Driving impaired could result in injury or death for you or others on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The \u2018Avoid \u2013 San Francisco County DUI Task Force\u2019 will be deploying Roving DUI Saturation Patrols during and following Sunday\u2019s Super Bowl match-up. Officers will deploy into communities where collision data reveals high incidents of DUI crashes and arrests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to data from NHTSA, in 2013 there were 867 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in California \u201329 percent of all crash fatalities in the state. A driver is considered alcohol-impaired with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, the legal limit. This February 1, don\u2019t become another tragic Super Bowl stat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDrunk driving is completely preventable&#8221;. &#8220;There is no excuse from drunk driving. Fans need to make a choice\u2026drink or drive, can\u2019t do both. Law Enforcement will be out in increased numbers specifically looking for drunk drivers. Please enjoy the game\u2026be safe,\u201d said San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For those who plan to drink, leave your keys at home. Designate a sober driver, whether it\u2019s a friend, relative, taxi, or public transportation. For those who plan to drive, refrain from any alcohol. Instead, enjoy the game with food and non-alcoholic drinks. Being a sober, designated driver is a key role on Super Bowl Sunday. You might just save a life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Avoid San Francisco County DUI Task Force funding is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that reminds everyone to \u2018Report Drunk Drivers! Call 9-1-1.\u2019 OTS is offering a free mobile app \u2013 DDVIP \u2013 aimed at thanking the sober designated driver with perks and free offers at area bars and restaurants. Available for iPhone and Android. Follow these tips to have fun, stay alive, and avoid getting pulled over or crashing your vehicle on game day.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Before Super Bowl Sunday, make a game plan that includes a sober driver \u2013 someone who is not drinking at all.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Leave your keys at home and designate a sober driver.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Consider getting a sober ride or taxi to your destination, so you won\u2019t even have the option later to drive impaired.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself. Eat plenty of food, take breaks, and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Keep track of the number of drinks you consume.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Stop drinking after the third quarter, just like they do at the actual stadium.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Make sure your designated driver is sober, not just less intoxicated than you.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Don\u2019t let others drive drunk. Arrange a safe way for them to get home, too.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 If you don\u2019t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend, or family member to come get you; or if possible stay where you are for the night and don\u2019t drive until you are sober.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Use your community\u2019s sober ride program.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 When you ride home with your sober driver, wear your seat belt. It\u2019s your best defense in a crash.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober friend to walk you home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Or Are You Driving?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">If so, don\u2019t drink. Your responsible choices can save lives.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Take your role seriously as the designated sober driver\u2014don\u2019t drink and drive.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Enjoy the party with food and non-alcoholic drinks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Brag about your MVP status on social media using the hashtag #designateddriver.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Wear your seat belt and require your passengers to do the same.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 If someone you know has been drinking and tries to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely. They\u2019ll thank you later. Fans Don\u2019t Let Fans Drive Drunk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Are You Hosting a Super Bowl Party?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">If so, plan now how you\u2019ll prevent your guests from driving drunk and help get them home safely.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Ask all of your guests to designate their sober drivers in advance, or help them arrange ride-sharing with sober drivers. If you plan to stay sober, offer to drive guests home.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Encourage your drinking guests to pace themselves.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Serve plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages at the party.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter\u2014this is a good time to serve coffee and dessert.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Thank the designated sober drivers at your party. You could even acknowledge them on social media using the hashtag #designateddriver.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Keep the phone numbers of local cab companies on hand and take the keys away from any guests who are thinking of driving drunk.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Remember, if you serve a guest alcohol and he or she gets in a drunk-driving crash that night, you could be held liable.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 If an underage person drinks and drives, the parent or guardian may be legally liable for any damage, injury or death caused by the underage driver.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Likewise, parents or other adults who provide alcohol to \u2013 or host a party where alcohol is available to \u2013 those under age 21, could face jail time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Are You Aware of the Risks?<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> Drunk driving is a serious problem with serious consequences. Don\u2019t become a Super Bowl stat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 In 2012 alone, there were 10,322 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes, 31 percent of all crash fatalities.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 An average of 1 alcohol-impaired-driving fatality occurred every 51 minutes in 2012.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Drunk drivers face jail time, the loss of their driver licenses, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost wages due to time off from work.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 The average DUI case costs approximately $10,000.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2022 Refusing to take a breath test in many jurisdictions results in immediate arrest, the loss of your driver\u2019s license on the spot and the impoundment of your vehicle.
