In this scam, the victim will receive a priority mail envelope via the U.S. Postal Service with a letter inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The letter reads that the recipient had been selected as a mystery shopper and gives instructions on how the program works. Also inside is a check in the amount of several thousands of dollars. In our incident the amount was for $2,890. The instructions asked the recipient to deposit the money into their bank account and deduct $200 for completing the assignment. It then stated to wire the $2,690 via Western Union and use $90 for transfer fees. The way this works is the recipient deposits the check into their bank account. This fraudulent check will not clear due to insufficient funds. The recipient is then responsible for the amount of the check, meanwhile the money wired earlier will have been successfully transferred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If you have received such notice\/letter you are asked to call your local police and report the incident online or call US Postal Police Inspectors at 1-877-876-2455. Do not cash the check.
